Foundational Supplements - Vitamin D

Vitamin D is vital for the immune system, cardiovascular health, and bone health. It affects mood, lowers susceptibility to cancer, and is important in the protection against Covid-19 infection

We synthesize vitamin D in the skin in response to UV light from the sun. Even in Colorado most people need to supplement with vitamin D3 to prevent deficiency.

Checking your vitamin D levels periodically on a blood test is always recommended when supplementing. In functional medicine, optimal levels of vitamin D are between 60-80 ng/ml. If you are deficient, we recommend taking 5000 IU of vitamin D3 and checking levels again in 3-6 months.

3 tips to ensure you are getting the most out of your Vitamin D:

* Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin. Taking it with a meal will ensure best absorption.

* Sufficient amounts of magnesium (Mag Absorb) are needed to convert vitamin D into its active form - calcitriol. This is not only important for maintaining optimal vitamin D levels, but important for regulating calcium metabolism.

* For optimal calcium metabolism and cardiovascular health, take vitamin D with vitamin K2. (K2-D3 5000) The vitamin D helps calcium get absorbed from foods and vitamin K helps calcium get into the bones instead of the soft tissues and arteries.
